His Desire is Toward Me

Song of Solomon 7:10 – “I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me.”

This tender passage speaks to us of the affection and security that are found in the marriage relationship as God intended. The words belong to the bride, and she expresses three distinct sentiments. She refers to her love for her spouse with the words “my beloved’s.” She speaks of the security of her relationship, belonging to him only, as seen in the phrase “I am my beloved’s.” And she is assured of his love as she says, “his desire is toward me.”

What a blessing it is to see those in the marriage covenant who are truly in love with each other and secure in that relationship! These words also remind us of the precious assurance and affection that every person can have in his relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ. The child of God can confidently say, “I am my beloved’s.” I belong to Him, and only to Him. It is a wonderful and comforting thing to know that we are united with Jesus in a spiritual and eternal relationship. He says in John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” Our lives are no longer our own; we belong to Him and find great assurance in knowing that we are secure in Him.

We can also say that “His desire is toward me.” We know that He loves us deeply, more than we can comprehend. This is one of the great messages of the Bible: God loves us immensely. One of man’s most basic needs is to be loved, and that need is met in the awareness of God’s great love for us. His love is found in the words of the Scripture. His love is seen in His coming to earth to purchase our sin-bound souls. His love is seen in His sacrifice on Calvary. God wants us to be with Him. One day Christ will return to take us home to Heaven to be where He is.

How could one see the great love the Savior has for us and not reciprocate that love? We cannot love Him as much as He loves us, but we love Him because He first loved us. God is our loving Father, and He wants us to love Him. This is the first and greatest commandment – that we love the Lord supremely and sincerely. Our relationship with Christ should never be reduced to only ritual or routine acts of religion.
