God’s Word is Unique
Hebrews 4:12 – “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,”
When I was a young man, I heard a preacher say that a Christian must be “a person of one book – the Bible.” He admitted that one cannot be well informed without reading other literature, but declared that one must always consider the Bible a unique volume that is above all others. No mere human work can be a substitute for it.
An outstanding English preacher often quoted poets like Wordsworth, Tennyson and Browning during the early years of his ministry. Later, however, he began to make his messages more Bible-centered. Referring to the literary productions of men, he said, “A curse is on us poor humans that these things cannot lift.”
In the Scriptures we are exhorted to take God’s Word seriously. We are reminded that the Israelites did not obey it after their deliverance from the land of Egypt, with the result that they died in the wilderness before they reached the land of Canaan. Refusing to listen when the Lord speaks is a serious offense.
Remember, God’s Word is the ONLY message which is able to lay open the deepest recesses of our being. It alone can diagnose what is wrong with us and bring healing when we obey.
Are you submitting yourself daily to the probing and searching action of the holy Scriptures? Remember, no other book is “living, and powerful and sharper than a two-edged sword.” Determine today that you are going to read and study the Word of God every day!
